I had the same question a few months ago. Here is the solution i found:
check http://www.circularlabs.com. They have a thing called Mobius, its a nice peace of software and its completely free.
Works great as a loop mashine. I use it for both keys (VST instruments) and guitars, since my guitar goes through POD Farm on my laptop.
The tool is very flexible, it has 8 tracks and many cool features. For example you can save your session with all the loops recorded and then simply load it again when you need it. Or load pre-recorded drum loops, etc.
Cool thing if you need a loop machine for a live performance. From another point, if you just want to play a little with it to get an impression if you generally need it or not - thats a great and cheap solution. I find any other \"hardware\" solution simply unreasonably too expensive.
